Látnivalók Pécsett

Zsolnay Well

Miklós Zsolnay offered in 1908 that he donates a fountain to the city in the honour of his father Vilmos Zsolnay. The fountain was made by Andor Pilch by 1912 but it was erected only in 1930. The eosin ox-headed spouts were made after the motifs of the bull-headed drinking-pots that were from the era of the Great Migration found in Nagyszentmiklós.

Vilmos Zsolnay Memorial Statue

Vilmos Zsolnay Statue. Vilmos Zsolnay's figure was poured into brass in 1906. Frigyes Schulek designed the 5 symbolic figures of the plutonit pedestal - pottery, chemistry, painting, sculpture, architecture - and it was carried out by Sándor Apáti Abt, these represent the function areas of the factory. The colorful tiled roofs of the surrounding buildings were also made in the Zsolnay Factory at different times.

World Heritage - Glass Rooftop

The curiosity of the Cella Septichora Visiting Center is the architectural solution which enables us to have a view into the memorials through the glass roof that is viable on the surface.

Zsolnay Porcelain Manufacture

AT THE MOMENT IT IS NOT AVAILABLE TRANSITIONALLY, as the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter is being built here, one of the key projects of PÉCS2010 with the sparkling culural life, university community spaces, cafés, car park, informative visit center that were all designed in a way so that the complex would be able to host 200.000 visitors.

Vasarely Museum

Dedicated to the works of Victor Vasarely (1906-1997), founder of the op-art movement, who was born in Pécs. Faux-threedimensional paintings, gobelins, replicated graphic and "kinetic statues". One of the three collections of Vasarely's work besides Gordes (France) and Budapest.

Zsolnay Museum

The exhibition introduces the artistic products that have been made by the Zsolnay factory since 1853. An exhibit on the life, times and decorative ceramics of Vilmos Zsolnay and the Zsolnay Ceramic Factory. The lustrous eosin glaze and colourful pyrogranite developed in the 1870s has given the Manufacture its fame and a Grand Prize at the 1878 Paris World Exhibition. Eosin had gained particular significance in Hungarian Art Nouveau, and became a popular material for public and private buildings as well as art objects. Although the fortunes of the company have been uneven, with world wars, family troubles, nationalisation in 1948 and the mass production of industrial ceramics, the hand-painted charm of the brand survives. The museum collects the lustrous ceramics of the Zsolnay legacy in chronological order in addition to plans, documents and other relics of this cornerstone of the city’s industrial heritage.

Zsolnay Mausoleum

The mysterious mausoleum was built on a hill in 1913 right behind the Zsolnay Manufacture in a district called Ledina (in Felsővámház street). The founder of the manufacture; Vilmos Zsolnay, his son; Miklós and other members of the family rest in the tomb. By the beginning of the 1990s, the building's state had become undeservingly run down. It was only due to the enthusiastic work of a local patriot person called Laszlo Lovas that the mausoleum has been preserved.

The present reconstruction of the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter includes the renovation of the mausoleum as well, however parts of it will never be the same as before (the crypt for example will remain closed for the public). Legend has it that on the occasion of midwinter (21 December) light arriving from above illuminated the sarcophagus so that fortunate persons could see the secret of the eosin. Few people know that the route leading to the mausoleum from the train station is marked with free mason motifs (Zsolnay statue, the tower of the university, Felsővámház). When finally entering the gate a 131 metres long promenade leads to the tomb. The mysterious building will be ready to visit from the outside from the beginning of November. Later, when restorations are finished the interior will also be open for public.

City Wall Promenades

One of the best ideas of the near past was the restoration of the wonderful inner city facilities called "city wall promenades". The western and northern parts of the Middle Age city walls were renovated. The results are two beautiful terraced parks. One of them which is called the Northern City Wall Promenade is to be found north of the Cathedral. Both locals and tourists like to inhabit the park, which is separated from the noisy part of the downtown. Perfect for those who seek shade on a sunny day, but it also provides space for young people playing freezbee for example.

Perhaps the legendary terraced gardens of Babylon inspired the creators of the Western City Wall Promenade. High above the city you will be amazed by the fantastic view from the western terraces that are surrounded by nice trees and tiny kiosks. It has three different entrances. The main one is a wooden gate on Esze Tamás street. Close to Kórház Square by Kafka Inn you find another entrance, while you can also access it from Szent István square at the House of the Civilian Communities. Once you are in Pécs, you should not miss this garden. Purely magnificent atmosphere awaits you there. During the summer season it is also home of an open air "jazzy" beer garden and restaurant. Jazzy is not a mistake, they add literature to it too as they entertain you with concerts as well as literary events. Kultúrkert ("Culture Garden") in here is open throughout the season from May until October. It's awesome; once you are there you will keep coming back.

Synagogue

The impressive Pécs Synagogue that was built in 1868 is a true "eye catcher" for all visitors. Kossuth Square itself, which has recently been remodelled allowing for a huge pedestrian space, draws most attention to the Synagogue. The Synagogue was built in romantic style according to the plans of Frigyes Feszl, Karoly Gerster and Lipót Kauser. Its organ was made in the famous Angster factory in Pecs. The writing around the clock says: ‘May all the people call this place a house of prayer". The Torah closet with the ark is on the eastern side of the Synagogue. It is well worth a visit inside to see the rich oriental ornaments.

TV Tower on the Misina Mountaintop

On top of the Misina plateau the 175 metre high TV Tower spears up in the height of 535 metres above the sea level. Looking down from the top, southwards you can see the town of Pécs and the Baranya Hills, further the Villanyi Mountains, eastwards the Zengo, westwards the Tubes, and on the North the Mecsek.
