It can be found in the heart of the city of Pécs between Széchenyi and Jókai Squares, a historically interesting block of buildings dating back to the 18th century. One of the buildings is mostly referred to by locals as Elefántos-Ház (Elephant House). The house was named aftre the „Black Elephant” grocery which opened on the ground floor in 1876. Its trademark, the sculpture of an elephant, can be seen on the building’s corner console. One can enter the compound from three different directions, all leading to the most beautiful Classicist style inner yard called Hild-Yard. If you are lucky you may even catch musical performances here. The Elephant House gives home to a restaurant and a cafeteria, while other buildings of the block serve as the "ateliers" of the House of the Arts, book shop or souvenir stores. Educated observers might identify various architectural styles here including Late Baroque, Eclectic as well as Romantic.
